While I was out of state, looking after the son of a fallen brother-in-arms—one of the finest men I ever had the honor to serve beside—Timberline was burned to the ground.

That little café and bar wasn’t just a place to grab a drink. It was my second chance after the loss of Paleto Outdoor Warehouse in the wildfires a few months ago. Starting over wasn’t easy, but I did it for this town—because I believe in Paleto Bay and the good, hardworking people who live here.

Now, I’m looking at photos of the aftermath. Charred wood. Ash everywhere. And above it all, the American flag I flew with pride—burned and torn. That image… that flag, reduced to smoke and cinders… it broke something in me I didn’t know could still break.

I’ve always tried to live by the values I served to protect—honor, service, loyalty. I didn’t open Timberline to get rich. I opened it to be part of something real, to give back, to build something that felt like home. And to see it destroyed while I was doing the right thing for a friend’s family—it’s a kind of hurt I can’t fully put into words.

The financial impact of this loss is more than I can shoulder alone, and unfortunately, Timberline won’t be reopening anytime soon.
